Dr Schmidt holds a degree in Economics from the University of Dortmund. He started his professional career as a teaching assistant at the University of Dortmund where he also obtained a PhD degree (Dr. rer.pol.) for his dissertation on “Institutional barriers to entry, potential competition and corporate behaviour”. In 1996, he joined the WIK (Wissenschaftliches Institut für Kommuni¬kationsdienste Scientific Institute for Communi¬cation Services) in Bad Honnef as a research assistant in the research groups on “Market structures and corporate strategy”, and “Regulation”. His research focus was on competition opportunities in the local area network, costing, and funding of universal service obligations. From 1997 to 2000, he headed the research group “Regulatory affairs and competition II” at the WIK, covering research on cost analysis for telecommunications networks, price regulation, cost accounting, auction procedures, market analyses and competition policy. Since 2000, he is with Deutsche Telekom AG where he has since been holding various senior executive positions with responsibility for national and international regulatory and governmental affairs in the fixed line business. Dr Schmidt has extensive experience regarding economic, competition, and regulatory policy issues in the telecommunications industry, from both the academic, and the corporate angle.
